On April 4, a hunger strike by Nadigar Sangam and against the actress asin

On April 4, a hunger strike was held by Tamil cinema condemning Karnataka. There was an order for all actors and technicians to participate in it.

But actors Karthick, Arya, Asin, Simran, Navya Nair, Gopika, Padmapriya, Nila and directors Balachander, Bharatiraja, Mani Ratnam, Shankar and many more did not take part in it. In a meeting held on April 8, it was discussed about taking action against them. The South India Nadigar Sangam, Tamil Film Producers' Council, Directors Association and other associations took part in it. It was decided that those who did not take part in the hunger strike should explain within15 days, otherwise action would be taken against them. The 15-day notice period ends today.

Speaking about it, the General Secretary of Nadigar Sangam, Radha Ravi said:

More than 15 actors did not participate in the hunger strike. They have all written letters of explanation. But Asin has not done so.

Some actors who are not members of the Association did not participate in the strike. We can't take action against them. But they all have sent letters of explanation to us. However, Asin being a member has not sent any letter. Therefore it is right to take action against her.

A decision will be taken after a discussion with all associations. The President of Nadigar Sangam, Sarath Kumar is out of station and as such the meeting will be held on his return.”

There is a likelihood that Asin will be banned from acting in Tamil films.

Bharath and Meera Jasmine in Kollywood Film Nepali - Review

Starring: Bharath, Meera Jasmine, Prem

Direction: VZ Durai

Music: Srikanth Deva

Production: Rama Saravanan

‘Nepali, the name itself suggests that something different is on offer. But everything that is different need not always be interesting. In a way, Nepali has nothing new in terms of its basic plot. It’s the same boy meets girl, love at first sight, marriage, tragedy and revenge plot, but the script takes a slightly offbeat route.

Nepali is the story of a young man, Bharath, who does odd jobs in many places during the day but assumes a dangerously sadistic persona at times. It is as if he knows things that few others know, doing things for reasons that only he knows. His hands hold steady as he sends people to their death, often in the most grueling ways. The law is behind him. But one thing puzzles us: why is he dressed in such a peculiar manner- those pointed brows and small eyes. Is he from Nepal?

Nepali is also the story of another young man, played by Bharath again, who has to face bitter experiences that change him forever. To start with, Bharath is shown as a software engineer, young and happy and in love with a girl in Ooty, Meera Jasmine. Facing opposition from her family, the lovers have no option but to elope and marry. It is a happy and contented life in a world of their own –and it couldn’t get better. But the evil shadow of a police officer who has developed a desire for Meera Jasmine lurks over them. Desire becomes obsession and tragedy follows close behind.

Nepali tells the story of one other young man- Bharath again! who ends up in jail for a crime that he could not avoid committing. In jail he meets a man who holds many secrets that could knock down many big names in the city. In the dark shadows of the gallows, the secrets change hands while no one notices. The hunted man with secrets does not survive but leaves his unfinished tasks in the hands of the young man he met.

This is basically what Nepali is all about. You might be a bit confused, and that’s exactly how the script is - confusing. You might also think that there are many layers to the story but it is actually a simple linear story that has been convoluted back and forth to produce a movie that falls just short of being interesting. The film is set in three time periods and the script moves back and forth between then and now. This kind of narration can be interesting, but the talented director, V.Z. Dhorai (remember the excellent Mugavari?), somehow misfires. This see-sawing narrative movement only makes the movie lose momentum far too many times, always moving in fits and starts, never settling into a steady pace.

The cast, except for Bharath, do not have a great deal to do. Bharath, in perhaps the most challenging role of his career, has done well. However, we have to remark that there was more potential in the role, and the director should have got more out of the star. Meera Jasmine’s role isn’t challenging: she walks through it with ease. Govind Namdev, as the old man in jail, has done a neat job. The rest of the cast consist of Charan Raj, Dhandapani, Raja Ravinder and Goutham who have all done fairly well with the limited roles they play.

Music by Srikanth Deva is a definite plus point, especially with the ‘Hey You’ being really lively. The script also flirts briefly with comedy with Mayilsaamy and company, trying to raise a few laughs. The Bharath-Meera romance is a low point in the movie: it never seems to work. It is not endearing, except in one song. Technically, the movie deserves praise for Mathi’s camera and Madan Gunadeva’s editing. The movie does seem a bit lengthy-around 3 hours.

Overall, Nepali is a product that started off with a good idea but slipped down because of a script that failed to maintain flow and execution that took the zing out of the plot. Certain scenes seem to go on forever. Nepali is not bad, not exactly mediocre either - it just fails to give us a really interesting three hours. During the film’s climax, Bharath runs into a subway followed by policemen; gunshots are heard and then…… you’re in for a surprise!

Ajith's Billa the kollywood film reaching the international arena

Billa, the yesteryear blockbuster of superstar Rajinikanth was remade with Ajith, Nayanthara and Namitha playing the lead roles. This film turned out to be a smash hit, more so for its stylish portrayal.

Billa’s popularity is taking it far and wide and now the movie is all set to be showcased in the Cannes Film Festival. According to our sources, the film will be screened on 10th May, 2008 at 4 pm.

The film’s director Vishnuvardhan and producer S. Suresh have flown down to France to participate in the event. With many films from Kollywood reaching the international arena, this will be yet another milestone.

Malabar beauty Asin's Explanation

Kollywood’s protest on Karnataka’s stance on the Hogenakkal issue, witnessed a huge turnout. Almost all the biggies in Kollywood, including Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan made it to the event, except a few who could not make it due to short notice and prior commitments.

Although the absentees were asked to give an explanation for their absence, Asin seemed to have ignored it. Having given the actress enough notice, the Nadigar Sangam planned to initiate action against her. Meanwhile, the Malabar beauty has sent a letter of apology stating that her commitment as the brand ambassador of a popular brand forbade her from partaking in the fasting.
She also gave an assurance that this would not happen in future. With the letter arriving on time the actress seems to have emerged unscathed this time!

‘Dasavatharam’ has Kamal Haasan in 10 roles Audio release

Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and Kamal Haasan were also present during the launch.

There was confusion at the Nehru Stadium, as thousands of passes had been distributed among the members of the Tamil cinema industry, fans of Kamal Haasan, the top brass of music company Sony BMG and leading lights of the ruling DMK regime, said a witness.

“Tempers ran high - on the side of the police as well as the fans. While the fans thought they had been cheated of a peek at the stars, the policemen felt they were doing a thankless job confounded by poor organisation,” says A.R. Laxman, a music company executive attending the function.

Media persons who had flown in from Mumbai and Delhi were not only kept out of the stadium because it was already packed, quite a few had to bear the brunt of police canes.

Police officials, however, expressed helplessness.

“Our job was to prevent any untoward incident to the VIPs. Would journalists have forgiven us if something bad had happened?” asked a flustered police official.

Matters were made worse by the presence of a large number of ruling DMK workers.

A spokesperson of Sony BMG, which has produced the film’s music, said they were unaware of the mayhem outside as they were present backstage.

Earlier, Jackie Chan and Bachchan where whisked from the Anna International Air Terminal in bullet-proof limousines to the Taj Coromandel Hotel by producer Oscar Ravichandran.

‘Dasavatharam’ has Kamal Haasan in 10 roles and the music for the much-awaited film has been composed by Bollywood’s Himesh Reshammiya, know best for his nasal crooning.

If the latest buzz doing rounds is to be believed, Nayantara has lost yet another oppurtunity to act opposite Ilayathalapathi Vijay.

The current news making rounds is that she is out of Vijay’s next venture Singam, which he is doing under the direction of Prabudeva. The buzz is that the name of a leading Telugu heroine is being suggested as the lead pair opposite to Vijay in Singam.

This news comes close on the heel of Nayantara losing the brand ambassador for the ‘Chennai Super Kings’ along with Vijay. Actor Vijay will be the sole ambassador of Chennai Super Kings now.

Sherin next project with Sanjayram, titled Poova Thalaya

A short sabbatical after Urchagam, Sherin is now ready to don the greasepaint once again. This actress from Mumbai states that she prefers meaty roles and would wait rather than accept mediocre roles.

About her next project with Sanjayram, titled Poova Thalaya, Sherin disclosed that she would dub for the movie for the first time. Donning the role of a Brahmin girl, she is required to speak in Brahminical accent, for which she is undergoing special training.

In fact Asin, who dubs for all her films irrespective of the language, was also specially coached to speak the Brahmin tongue for Dasavatharam, despite being well-versed in many languages.

Sherin currently plays the role of a software engineer in S.J. Suryah’s Vil. Speaking for her role in Vil, she said: “As the role demands dressing up in modern outfits, I would be sporting some glam clothes.”

Vijay Schedule clash with IPL and Kuruvi

IPL fever has caught on India and entire nation is gripped with cricket mania. Chennai Super Kings has been performing in an exemplary fashion till date not having dropped a single match. Ilayathalapathy Vijay is the brand ambassador from tinsel town for CSK who has been doing his duty religiously, cheering the team in all the matches.

The buzz that is doing the rounds in the industry is that IPL matches have made a dent in collections of the recently released films. The general norm in the industry to release a film during summer vacation is to attract the youth community. But cricket fever has affected box office collection to a large extent and many films which are due to release this vacation may see a postponement, thanks to cricket.

Vijay’s Kuruvi which was initially slated for a May 2nd release is getting postponed by a couple of days to 3rd May which is a Saturday and this is very unusual in filmi world. When probed, it was revealed that a CSK match is scheduled on Friday the 2nd May and the authorities did not want to risk a release on that day. Looks like the cricketer Vijay has overshadowed actor Vijay this time!

Robot dialogue script getting late

Robot, the much hyped project of Shankar had a great blow with the sudden demise of its script writer Sujatha. As Sujatha was associated with the project from its early stage of inception, it was difficult to find a suitable replacement. Now the team has found the perfect replacement in Balakumaran who has a special place in Tamil literary field.

His creations have always touched the chords of many Tamilians all over the world. He has a rich experience of having worked with Shankar in his earlier films like Kadhalan and Gentleman. Secondly he had written the dialogues for Rajini’s Badshah too and had impressed him. So, with the inclusion of Balakumaran in Robot, the film is getting ready in all aspects.

Bollywood Actress Sameera Reddy Interview

Sameera Reddy fans and admirers, who loved her dumb bimbo act with Anil Kapoor in Abbas-Mastaan’s RACE, will find it difficult to recognize her in Buddhadeb Dasgupta’s just-released Bengali film KAAL PURUSH (Memories in the Mist.) Sameera flew down for the premiere to Kolkata and flew back even before the film was over. Her role in KAAL PURUSH was followed by another role in Dasgupta’s latest film THE VOYEURS. Our correspondent spoke to the very friendly and beautiful Sameera

Considering that your debut in films began only in 2002 with MAINE DIL TUJHKO DIYA, you have come a long way, right?
I consider myself lucky to have worked with the best directors in the industry. It has not been easy but it is not easy for anyone in the industry. It is an uphill climb for all of us here, including Shahrukh Khan. I have worked with directors ranging from Sanjay Gupta through Ram Gopal Verma to Buddhadeb Dasgupta and Aruna Raje. I worked with Mira Nair though that was for a short film MIGRATION, screened at the Toronto Film Festival in 2007. I play a housewife who is HIV+. THE VOYEURS, my second film with Buddha-da, was screened at the same festival.

How did it all begin?
When I was still studying at the Sydenham College in Mumbai, I happened to be chosen for a Pankaj Udhas video called ‘Aashita’. My sisters, Meghna and Sushma were also very inspiring for me. I used to be a fun-loving, happy-go-lucky girl in college. But after this video, I became serious and decided to concentrate on two things – training in Kathak and acting in films. After my debut in MAINE DIL TUJHKO DIYA, I did two Telugu films, NARASIMHUDU and JAI CHIRANJEEVA.

How do you look at the polarities between the two characters you have played in RACE and KAAL PURUSH?
I am not bothered about polarities because the films are different, the directors are different and even the audience is different. Though I consider myself a spontaneous actress, I need a director to guide me so that it makes me a director’s actress as well. Playing a dumb bimbo in RACE is equally important to me as is playing Supriya in Buddha-da’s KAAL PURUSH. I was looking for a comic role after serious stuff like Sanjay Gupta’s MUSAFIR and Ram Gopal Verma’s DARNA MANA HAI. I am thrilled that the film is a big hit. KAAL PURUSH on the other hand, thanks to Buddha-da, really made me understand and learn to love what I was doing.

How close are you to Supriya, the ambitious housewife you played in KAAL PURUSH?
I loved the character of Supriya because it has several shades to it, beginning as a hard and bitter woman and then, unable to cope with a husband who turns out to be a ‘failure’ by her definition, she slowly realises that she must become independent. The great American dream is just a trigger to turn her into a writer of travelogues on places she has never visited but has seen only on video. Love for Supriya, slowly turns to pity, as her husband tells his father at one point in the film. I do not equate any character I play with my real self as Sameera, the woman and Sameera, the actress. An actress need not be ‘close’ or ‘distant’ to a character.

Which scene in the film do you carry with you in your heart?
I love the scene in which I play the prostitute who the hero suddenly visits one night. She finds his behaviour rather strange especially when he asks her, ‘why don’t you put on your sari?’ Then, with a sad and puzzled expression on her face, she says, “You won’t begin to pull at it again, will you?” She somehow feels he is a good man but is confused and sad. It is a scene I will carry with me forever. Thanks to Buddha-da, he really pushed me beyond my expectations. That is why when he asked me whether I would like to feature in THE VOYEURS; I did not even ask him for the script. It has been a pleasure working with him.

You are much disciplined in your daily life, we hear.
I wasn’t before. But after I began training in Kathak from Pandit Viru Krishna Maharaj and then entered films, my life changed forever. I am grateful to Guruji for having taught me how to use Kathak in a film situation. Today, I wake up early, do my yoga, followed by my Kathak riyaaz, regular work out and I am sorted for the day. My turning point came with MUSAFIR and though I have had my share of flops, there have been milestones too. KAAL PURUSH is my career best till date. The film and the director helped me develop a new dimension – imbibing the Bengali culture in terms of its language, its food, the way a woman like Supriya dresses, making me fall in love with our traditional mode of dress – the sari.

Your future projects?
I am playing the female lead, a Naxalite, in Aruna Raje’s RED ALERT on the contemporary nationalist movement. It explores and shows how circumstances decide the destiny of a person who evolves into a Naxalite in course of time. Along with me are Sunil Shetty, Ayesha Dharkar and Naseeruddin Shah. Then there is MAHAYODDHA RAM, an animation film where I have done the voice-over for ‘Sita’, and two more comedies about which I am not supposed to say much at this point.

Bollywood Actor Suniel and Govinda reduces their wieght 8kg

Govinda lost eight kilograms while in Bangkok thanks to Suniel Shetty, who is known not only to be fiercely health conscious but also to make his colleagues lose weight at the drop of flab.

"I've already lost 8 kg, thanks to Suniel who put me on a fat-free no-oil diet while we were shooting in Bangkok," said Govinda, who has since returned from the shooting of Loot in Bangkok.

The film is being produced by Suniel and also stars Mithin Chakrbaroty's son Mimoh.

"And if you think that's a miracle let me tell you, young Mimoh Chakrbaroty, who's my co-star in Loot lost 18 kg in Bangkok because of Suniel," Govinda said.

Govinda elaborates on his do-or-diet regime in Bangkok saying: "The food was specially prepared by Suniel's cousin. And we were not allowed any carbohydrates for dinner at all. I quickly began to feel lighter and healthier, so much so that I did the unthinkable."

Govinda felt so light that he agreed to perform a heart-in-the-mouth action scene.

"It was a chase sequence where we had to climb down from the 20th floor to the 17th with a rope. I never thought I'd have the courage or the physique to do it. It was Suniel who provided the inspiration. He took the initiative and I took the plunge with him,” said the actor.

"It was very risky, no doubt, but action director Allan Amin had taken all the precautions. I've never done anything like that in my life. I've always been known for my dancing and comedy, though I've done a lot of other things," he said.

Worst Tamil Songs composed by srikanth deva in Lawrence's Pandi Movie

Lawrence Raghvendra and Sneha have played lead roles while elephant-ghost like Namitha dons an important role.

Of course, if you are yearning to watch the vulgar songs ever made in Tamil Cinema, Pandi would be the best option. Yesterday, soon after the audio launch, couple of songs along with the trailer was screened to the audiences and chief guests who were present there.

Actor Bharath, Dhanush and Sandhya were present for the occasion as chief guests in releasing the audio at A/c Theatre in AVM Studios.

Amrita Arora turning heads - Surrey with new husband

There's a new girl in town, Amrita Arora and she is turning heads as she walks down the leafy lanes of Surrey with new husband, England cricketer Usman Asfaal. "Well," says Usman, "She's a good looking girl. If they were interested in me I'd be a bit surprised." Bollywood and cricket seem to go together like strawberries and cream these days!

Amrita chooses her movies very carefully. She attracted everyone's attention in the controversial lesbian thriller, Girlfriend opposite the stunning and outrageous Isha Koppikar.

One of the best films of last year, Red: The Dark Side courted further controversy with its 27-minute steamy sex scene! She starred in this with femme fatale Celina jaitley.

This year is going to be a big year for Amrita with a long-awaited appearance alongside Katrina Kaif and Salman Khan in Hello based on Chetan Bhagat's monster-award winning book "One Night at the Call Centre" - a book that everyone should read!!

This will be followed by Heroes also with Salman, and the Deol brothers and Preity Zinta - and then, if that wasn't enough for any dance card, Amrita will pop up again in Golmaal Returns with in-form Kareena Kapoor, Ajay Devgan and Celina Jaitley once again.

Amrita is definitely a young woman turning heads - and not just in Surrey!

Bhavana's fourthcoming film Jeyamkondaan

Cute Actress Bhavana was touted to be one of the promising contenders for the top position in Tamil filmdom; however Bhavana could only count her debut Chithiram Pesuthadi as a hit of the half a dozen movies she starred in so far.

Yet, her girl-next-door looks and the innate naivety that she sports has gained her a decent name among the press. For the same reasons, Bhavana has not been written off yet and still has Jeyamkondaan to bank on.

“I am aware that few of my movies did not do well, but I’ve all my hopes pinned on Jeyamkondaan,” Bhavana was quoted as saying. Jeyamkondan’s director Mani - who hails from the Mani Ratnam’s stable - also vouched for her.

According to him, the movie will serve as a re-launch pad for Bhavana whose talents were buried in candy floss romances so far. Shot mostly in and around Tamil Nadu, Jeyamkondan’s crew will fly to Russia and Uzbekistan for the song sequences.

For Jeyankondan, she has dubbed for her own and says that she has taken maximum care to ensure that her Tamil diction is proper and flawless.

Govind Kant Sharing his experiences about Celina Jaitley

Govind Kant Sharing his experiences, who was a paying guest in the same house as Celina Jaitley. The year was 1996. I was working in Kolkata. I was a paying guest at a home in Ballygunj Circular Road. Celina was also a paying guest in the same house, and lived in the adjoining room.

She was a small time model at the time and would appear in an advertisement in the local newspaper, The Telegraph, for a local tutorial. I remember boasting to my friends whenever I saw the ad that the girl lived in the same house as I did.

She was seeing a guy then, who had the physique of a bouncer. She would come home late in the night due to her modelling assignments.

My only conversation with her was when I borrowed an Archie’s comic, of which she was a fan. I later came to Sydney for higher studies and it was here that I learnt that she had become an actress. This has now become a regular story I tell around the dinner table to friends.

Mandira tried explaining to the cleanliness-conscious lady

Mandira Bedi recently experienced a strange, ironic moment while shooting for Mumbai Chakachak. The film’s cast and crew, including Rahul Bose and Cyrus Broacha, were shooting at a prominent seaside location in Mumbai, when a lady who was taking a walk stopped to reprimand Mandira and the crew for dirtying the area. The funny thing is, the film is trying to convey that very same message to citizens!

“It’s all going to be picked up ma’am,” Mandira tried explaining to the cleanliness-conscious lady. Permissions have been taking from the BMC,” to which the lady retorted, “To dirty the place?” Mandira continued, “We haven’t wrapped up our shoot yet. All of this will be cleaned up once we do.”

But the lady, too annoyed at the mess to listen to reason, stormed off. Looks like Mumbai Chakachak is getting people charged up about cleanliness even before hitting theatres.
